A few weeks ago I was on I-94 heading back home to Madison from Milwaukee. Someone going the opposite direction had a red Mustang convertible with the top down, flying a bigass confederate flag on a pole mounted somewhere behind the seats. My thought process:

Very simply - if you wave a confederate flag (AKA Confederate States of America) flag you are a racist and support slavery. The “states rights” the southern states were supporting were simply a states right to have slaves. More importantly this country is a Constitutional Republic - if you (or your group of states) disagree with a law passed by the Legislative or Executive Branches of our government you go to work and get it vetoed or changed by popular vote you don’t just pick up your ball and go home (or in this case start a god damn war). That’s not how it works. If you want to claim anything claim that the advent of the CSA is the reason that more Americans died than in any other war, there’s another reason to not support i.

If you’re any where near Michigan which I assume you are giving the Wolverine remark above, you definitely shouldn’t be waving a CSA flag giving Michigan stood so staunchly against the South. Meh, I’d prefer someone who isn’t actively being sued for fraud (Trump University) but I won’t start that huge argument haha.

I would highly recommend you check out Gary Johnson though, he’s almost to the 15% polling numbers needed to be included in the major national debates, he’s running as a Libertarian and I think you may like him.

And Bernie’s not going to make it whether his supporters admit it or not, which is a shame I think he was a better candidate than Hillary.

In fairness, the origins of the flag are deeply racist. It’s been used increasingly as a simple symbol of rebellion in more recent years, but what it originally stood for was most definitely racist.

Also, if I may add my two cents as a black person, I do feel the need to be wary any time I see someone flying or displaying it. Because while not every person showing the flag is racist, most people who are racist do openly show the flag. So when I see it that’s my cue to have my guard up.
